5 Must-Haves When Getting A Fence Installed In North Dakota

North Dakota's ground and weather aren't forgiving of shortcuts. Here are five things that should be non-negotiable on any fence project here, regardless of who you hire.

A fence that looks right on installation day and a fence that's still standing straight in ten years aren't always the same project — the difference usually comes down to a handful of details that don't show up until later. If you're planning a fence anywhere around Bismarck or the rest of North Dakota, here are five things worth confirming before you sign anything, no matter which company you hire.

1. An On-Site, In-Person Quote

Every property is a little different once you actually walk it — slope, tree roots, soil type, an existing fence on the property line, or a gate that needs to clear a slab of concrete none of that shows up in a phone estimate. An in-person quote means the number you're given accounts for what's actually there, instead of getting adjusted upward once digging starts.

2. Posts Set Below The Frost Line

This is the one detail that matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country. North Dakota's frost line runs deep, and a post set above it will get pushed up by the ground itself as it freezes and thaws each year — not eventually, often within the first winter or two. Ask directly how deep the posts are going and whether that depth accounts for your specific fence height and wind exposure, not just a one-size-fits-all number.

3. Utility Locates Called In Before Digging

Buried gas, electric, and water lines don't announce themselves, and hitting one while digging post holes is a real safety and cost risk, not a minor inconvenience. Calling in utility locates before any digging starts should be standard procedure, not something you have to request. If a contractor doesn't bring this up on their own, ask who's responsible for it and when it happens relative to the install date.

4. A Written Scope Of Work

Materials, total linear footage, fence height, number and width of gates, hardware, and whether an old fence is being removed first should all be spelled out before work begins — not worked out verbally and remembered differently by both sides later. A written scope protects you if something gets missed, and it protects a good contractor from a homeowner remembering the conversation differently after the fact. If a quote is just a single lump-sum number with no breakdown, ask for one.

5. Confirmed Property Lines And Setbacks

A fence built even a foot over a property line can turn into a real problem — at resale, in a neighbor dispute, or if the city or county requires it to be moved later. Confirming the property line and any applicable setback requirements before building costs almost nothing upfront and avoids a much more expensive fix down the road. This matters whether you're in a Bismarck subdivision with a recorded plat or on a rural parcel where the boundary hasn't been walked in years.

Putting This Checklist To Use

None of these five things are unusual or hard for a legitimate fence installer to commit to — that's exactly why they're a good filter. A contractor who's willing to answer all five questions clearly and specifically is telling you something about how the rest of the job will go. One who gets vague on any of them is telling you something too.

How We Handle All Five

On every job, we quote in person, set posts below frost depth, call in utility locates ourselves, put the scope of work in writing, and confirm the property line before we build. If you're planning a wood, vinyl, chain link, or farm and ranch fence anywhere in the Bismarck area, this checklist is exactly how we run our own quotes.
